Hi Tiana,

Peninsula fireplaces are gorgeous to look at but their design does make them a little difficult to baby proof. Your best bet would be a baby gate that can be set up 3-in-1 baby gate like the one mentioned earlier in the article. These baby gates can be attached to the wall either side of the peninsula fire place and form a pen around it, seperating your baby from danger.

Keep being awesome!

Hi! At what age is it safe to take away the fireplace gate? He’;s 5 and understands that he has to stay away. Is that enough? I’;m tempted to baby proof til he’;s 18 ;-)

Thanks so much for sharing this advice on baby-proofing your fireplace! I had no idea that it was possible to get a 3-in-1 metal gate that can be used to enclose the child OR the fireplace. That sounds like a really nice invention, especially since it offers so much versatility.

What should I do if the entire wall the fireplace is on is covered in stone, which would make it difficult to screw the gate to the wall.

As a Certified Professional Childproofer, I fix 1 x 2 strips of wood to the stone wall with screws and proper cement anchors finding discreet spaces under a stone or in the mortar between the stones. These spots may never be noticed or patched when the gate is taken away.

Free standing Fireplace Screens are to be avoided because they can fall over. However there is available, particularly for Gas Fireplaces, Secure Fireplaces Screens which strongly adhere to the metal frame of the Fire Place Insert with magnets. They are made to measure and allow you to use the fireplace with the children in the room without worry of touching the hot glass.

Today if you walk into any dining room you'll often find it is very modern and almost clinical and you may feel that you need to go back to a more traditional way of how a dining room actually looked and worked, more often than not the dining room was also situated near or a joining the kitchen. Perhaps there's never been a better time at the moment to get back to what a traditional kitchen and dining room used to be.
